photo of the day: ancient earthworks
These ancient earthworks are just off the main road between Belfast and my home town. I have a weird obsession with hill forts, dolmens, cairns and so on and I eyed up this clump of trees every time we passed it.
We finally got round to stopping at it last weekend and up close it's clear that the mound and its ditch around the perimeter were at least partly formed by humans and I just find it fascinating. Keep your eye trained to spot these ancient formations in the landscape.

Photo of the day: Islandmagee Peninsula
I haven't had a photo of the day in ages, so here are two at once from a recent daytrip around Islandmagee.
We had a wander around the tiny port at Portmuck and saw this bizarre ancient dolmen preserved rather unceremoniously right in the middle of someone's driveway on the drive around the peninsula.

Random photo of the day
Dunluce Castle and the skerries outside Portrush in County Antrim. I took this photo when my brother's girlfriend's family were visiting us from Sri Lanka a couple of years ago and we got this gorgeous evening to visit The Giant's causeway and the coast road.
And the sunset really did look that good.

Random photo of the day
Danny and I spent our honeymoon island-hopping in Greece and we came across this windmill on the magical island of Santorini.

I took this photo one sunny evening years ago when my dad drove me out to the Woods around Portglenone to see the bluebell carpet. Makes me want to go there now.

Random photo of the day
I met this beautiful schoolgirl in Ndola, Zambia when I was there the first time with an organisation called Friends of Africa. Two of the other volunteers were student teachers so I spent a few days visiting various schools with them. The buildings and teaching materials were very basic but the kids were really eager to learn.

Five Phone Photos
Five completely unrelated photos from recent times when I've been caught without my camera. Why is it that the supposed fanciest smartphone in existence has such a pathetic camera?
Above: at the Grand Opera House in Belfast waiting for King Lear to begin. Derek Jacobi was wonderful but never having read the play I must shamefully admit that I didn't have a clue what was going on.
We spotted this heron during our towpath walk on Saturday. It caught a little frog and downed it in one.
Below: Dan tries to feed the local geese but we had very few takers. North Belfast birds are too good for stale bread it seems.

I took this photo of a road with gnarly trees near Ballycastle, Ireland while out for a walk with the family. (I'm informed that these trees are known as the 'Dark Hedges' and are 300 years old!)

Random photo of the day
Yesterday I went for a long walk along the Lagan Towpath with husband Danny and our friend Ashley. We followed the river out of the city and then settled ourselves for a while in a sunny patch in a meadow. I carried my heavy camera all the way out there only to discover I'd left my memory card at home (doh!) but here's a photo I made there earlier. It was a nice day.

Random photo of the day
I took this photo of one of the many fountains in the Alhambra in Granada, Spain a couple of years ago when I went with my mum and her school exchange trip (she was a Spanish teacher).
The Moorish builders of this palace complex used mind-boggling techniques to transport running water through all areas, there are even water rivulets flowing down the stair hand rails - check it out!

Random photo of the day
The 'Twelve Apostles' on the Great Ocean Road in Southern Australia. Some friends and I hired a couple of camper vans in Melbourne and went on a fun-filled road trip back in 2004. I believe of of these 'apostles' has since crumbled in to the sea.
Me and bestie Eoin who is a professional ski bum and adventurer.

Random photo of the day
A giraffe strolling along the banks of the Zambezi River. We also saw hippos lazing around, elephants washing in the sunset and even a crocodile. It was better than a safari - especially as we saw all this from the 'booze cruise' boat trip with barbeque, drinks and views all included.

Random photo of the day
Young girl with cool beaded hair in a children's home in Ndola where I spent a couple of weeks during my first trip to Zambia.
Taken with my beloved lomo fisheye camera.
